To Be Treasured

When you look in the mirror, what do you see, what do you hear, and how do you feel? Looking into a mirror is more than an action. When you wake up and look into that mirror, what are you really seeing, hearing, and feeling about yourself?

STOP!

Don’t look at the blemish. Don’t look at that wrinkle. Don’t look at your gap. Don’t look at your hair. Don’t look at your body.

We’re going to talk about the power of reflection. This isn't what you see is what you get. We’re going to talk about ‘reflection’ of self by connecting the definitions of the word.

Reflection:

  1. the throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.

  2. serious thought or consideration.

Whether you’re looking at yourself in a mirror or water, you are the reflection of what you ‘know’ about yourself, not what you ‘think’ about yourself. Today, we’re going to ‘WAKE’ ourselves up.

My morning starts with me getting freshened up and then looking into the mirror. I look at myself and think “Ashley, you need to lose weight. Ashley, you need your hair done. Ashley, your skin isn’t as clear as it deserves to be. Ashley, you could be so much better and happier in life.”

What I ‘think’ about myself can be counterproductive. It can also be harmful. It can also lead to more dangerous ideas and actions towards myself.

What I know about myself is what I have to practice declaring every day. What I know about myself is more powerful than what I think. I know the hell I have endured in my life. I know that there’s so much more to me than this. I know that the world isn’t ready for the authentic, the original, and the irreplicable . I know that there are improvements that can be made. I know I’m an introvert and I’m making changes with that. In this world, we have many titles and sometimes, we ignore and water down those titles. We diminish ourselves to these tiny, itty bitty beings when in reality, we’re bigger than that.

My reflection in what I see has to connect with how I consider myself and how I know myself. I can look in the mirror and ‘know’ that I’m an English: Literature major who speaks, reads, and writes in German at an elementary level. I’m a storyteller. I’m an author. I had to start acknowledging who I am. I’m more than just a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, and so on and so forth. Those titles are intimate, but the titles that we earn and give ourselves help us grow.

I look in the mirror and know, “Ashley, there’s joy, there’s hope, and there’s happiness that you deserve. You may not see it or think it, but you know deep down, you deserve it.”

When you look into that mirror, see yourself in every stage of your life. From a child, to preteen, to teenager, to young adult, and adulthood. Every single phase in our lives, we have thought something about ourselves or someone has said something that has stayed with us for so long that we feed it. We feed it with negativity, doubt, hurt, anger, pain, regret, so much to where it grows and attaches itself to us.

Go back in your thoughts, your memory bank and ‘think’ of everything that you and someone else has said. Then counteract it with positive, powerful, decrees.

“You’re horrible” “You could have done better.” “You’re just like…” “Don’t be pathetic” “You’re always making excuses” “You’re never going to amount to a damn thing” “I can’t even look at you”

These are just half of the poisons that have been placed in our heads that have deep rooted itself into our hearts and grows within our bellies. Look in the mirror, no matter what size, color, and shape…look in the mirror and know that you have the power to combat every single negative, deadly, hurtful word(s) that you have thought and said about you. Start speaking to your reflection and considering every word of positivity and power that you know about yourself.

Here are some empowering words you can use any time, any place, and any where.:

“Your beauty is born, not imitated.”

“Your mind is one of a kind, not artificial.”

“You are confident, not cocky.”

“You are blessed, not lucky.”

“My life has detours, but never dead ends.”

“I’m flourishing, never depleting.”

“You are not everyone else, because everyone else will never be you.”

“To know yourself, is not what you think about yourself.”

What are three decrees and declarations that you repeat to yourself and believe? Do you think this helps you with your growth?

I will end this post with a lyric from Flyleaf’s song Treasure. It’s a powerful, moving song that speaks to your soul and spirit. Whenever I felt that I wasn’t enough or I would never be enough, I played this song and I knew that each word was true…because of my faith and love for and in God. For ME, this song really helped me see and know that even in this world full of copycats and falsehoods, I am treasured. I was created and treasured by God, who tells me that I am more than what I think I am. Even when you have that feeling of not being enough, there’s someone who knows that you are. Yeshua. ✝

Flyleaf’s, Treasure

That night I felt like I'd become something treasured different

Can I tell you a story as we dance while the sun starts to bleed?

Song of Songs' Love is calling, "Daughter, wake up from your sleep"

Refined I'll become the most dazzling precious treasure

I'll be treasured over all the earth

Bearing the gift of a new heart

Patience ablaze I'm slowly burning

Refined I'll become the most dazzling precious treasure

I'll be treasured over all the earth

Refined I'll become the most dazzling precious treasure

I'll be treasured over all the earth

I am in awe and in shock

I am in love and given away

I'm reserved with these words

Can I tell you a story as we dance while the sun starts to bleed?

Trees rejoice with the wind here

Hallelujah, Yeshua

Tonight I've become the most dazzling precious treasure

I am treasured over all the earth

Just look at what he's done

How he's laying down his life

Take this life

Oh most dazzling precious treasure

Tonight I've become the most dazzling precious treasure

I am treasured over all the earth
